Life in Durham

Life in Durham sought to discover the benefits of installing digital communication systems at key locations throughout Durham’s historic city centre.

With over 3 million annual visitors, 300+ local businesses supported, and more than 20 events hosted in 2021, the city needed an effective, engaging way to connect people with everything it has to offer.

The goal was to implement digital totems that could do more than just display content, they needed to deliver information securely and quickly, support accessibility, provide real time wayfinding, and integrate seamlessly with smartphones to offer directions, promotions, and messaging directly to users.

In the wake of the pandemic, the focus evolved further. The initiative aimed to generate fresh, meaningful content that would celebrate, support and promote the city’s diverse business community, helping both residents and visitors rediscover the true excellence of life in Durham.

Challenges

Durham’s bustling city centre required a digital solution that could serve a broad audience, from daily commuters and tourists to business owners and event organisers. Traditional signage was no longer effective in delivering the rich, real time information needed to support foot traffic, promote events, and provide accurate navigation.

There was also a growing need to support post-pandemic recovery by driving engagement with local businesses and events. The system had to be accessible to all users, meet modern digital expectations and offer mobile-friendly features that aligned with the way people now interact with their environment – on the move and on their devices.

Solution

We deployed a network of digital interactive totems throughout the city centre. These sleek, modern displays have become key communication points, offering engaging, up-to-date content that promotes everything from local shops and eateries to cultural attractions and community events.

The totems are equipped with touchscreen functionality and wayfinding tools, allowing users to easily navigate Durham’s streets and discover points of interest. Accessibility features are integrated into the design to ensure all members of the community can interact with the content comfortably and effectively.

Crucially, the system is built with smartphone integration in mind. Visitors can scan QR codes to receive step-by-step directions, special offers and event updates directly to their devices, bridging the gap between physical and digital interaction.

To further support the city’s recovery, the content strategy focused on celebrating local stories, spotlighting independent businesses, and encouraging participation in the wide array of events Durham has to offer.

Benefits

The introduction of the digital communication system transformed the way people interact with the city. With intuitive, accessible touchpoints placed at strategic locations, Life in Durham now provides a streamlined, interactive experience for millions of visitors each year.

Local businesses benefited from increased visibility, while event organisers found new ways to promote and drive attendance. The mobile-friendly design empowered users to take the city with them, enhancing convenience and improving overall engagement.

Most importantly, the project helped cultivate a renewed sense of community pride and connection. It offered residents and visitors alike an invitation to explore, support, and celebrate the best of Durham, all through a modern and immersive digital platform.
